Chile receives new ambassador

Chilean President Sabastian Pinera Echenique pledged his country’s support for a negotiated settlement of the ongoing dispute in Cyprus. He said that in a speech while receiving the credentials of Cyprus’ new ambassador to Brasilia in Chile, Mr Matha Mavrommatis.

Echenique also stressed that Chile will continue to support efforts for the reunification of Cyprus through negotiations, and that the ongoing talks will see results soon.

The Chilean President also pointed out that while bilateral ties between Chile and Cyprus could be improved, there is already a good cooperation and relationship on a multilateral level.

In a briefing to Echenique about the current UN-led talks which began in September 2008, Mavrommatis mentioned Cyprus President Demetris Christofias’ unwavering determination for a solution to the disputes in Cyprus on the basis of UN resolutions and international and European laws.
